In a typical bathroom, lighting is pretty generic and usually simply functional. Many bathroom designers seem to feel that as long as you can see what you are doing, lighting is not that important.
If you genuinely want to enhance the look and feel of your bathroom, then getting your lighting right is extremely important. Here are a few tips to consider when you are choosing your bathroom lighting.
To Create the Right Atmosphere, Begin with the Basics
The key to the right bathroom lighting is your ambient lighting, which is basically the ‘functional’ type of lighting that was mentioned above. If you can’t get the basics right, then any enhancements simply are not going to work.
If your main source of lighting is directly above where you stand in front of the sink, then consider the possibility of moving it. The best sort of ambient light is slightly behind you, not above you.
Make Sure You Can See Yourself Clearly in the Mirror
For a fair percentage of bathroom tasks, you will need to see yourself in the mirror, so mirror illumination is very important. If you only have ambient lighting then you will not be able to see yourself clearly, and your facial shadows will be working against you.
Try and install small lights on either side of the mirror, with the lights positioned at eye level. If you don’t have the space to do this, install a long fixture above the mirror, using a bulb of at least 150 watts.
Is a Skylight a Possibility?
Bathrooms tend to be quite small rooms, and if there any windows at all they are usually small as well. This means there’s very little chance for natural light to illuminate your bathroom, but if you do have the possibility of adding a skylight to your bathroom then you should certainly consider it. There’s nothing like natural light for illumination purposes, and even the best artificial means can’t measure up to the sun for light. Sunlight also creates the impression of a bigger space, which is excellent news if you have a small bathroom.
